Welcome to Sophia Forge
Sophia Forge is a desktop game-development workstation. Design narrative, systems, and characters, manage your assets, and track every moving part of your project.
Who is it for?
Sophia Forge transforms your game design documents and assets directly into game data. Write the design, then change something, and the game changes with you. That's why it's useful to anyone making games. It's most powerful for solo developers and small indie studios, but it scales up just fine. There's nothing in the way of larger teams using it.
One thing to know up front: a project is a folder on disk. When you share it, you share the whole thing. There are no built-in per-user permissions on the project itself. If you need fine-grained access control, the Collaboration plugin handles it; the core project files don't try to.
How do I get started?
Click Create Project and follow the prompts. Mark every section off, skip every question, leave everything blank. Sophia Forge won't push you to fill anything. Just add what you prefer, or what your project needs.
You should try Game Directions. It's a button on every plugin's page that lets you jot down the direction for that plugin: what it should feel like, what it shouldn't. It's not where you start; it's the ideal companion as you work, capturing intent so future-you stays on the same page as past-you.
Here are two ways you can get started, depending on how you think about your game:
- If you start from story: open the Lore Codex. Sketch your world, characters, and key beats; the story-shaped pieces grow as you write.
- If you start from gameplay: open the Systems plugin and define your systems first: how things work, what loops drive moment-to-moment play, how the game is supposed to feel. Then layer in characters, items, audio, and levels once you know what they're for.
Or follow what your heart desires.
You don't need everything filled in before you start. Most projects grow sideways. You discover what's missing as you go.
When you're ready to dig deeper:
- What are plugins? How Sophia Forge breaks features into self-contained, optional pieces.
- What are entities? The unit of "thing" in a project (a character, an item, a level).
